About Us
Helping Homeless Teenage Mothers
and Their Children
Almost Home has two core programs: long-term Transitional Housing, for 15 homeless teenage mothers (ages 12-19) and their children; and Apartment Living, a next-step toward independence for 12 single mothers and their children. Our goal is to help them learn to be self-sufficient and independent members of society.
Within these two core programs are several components, including:
-
Education (formal and informal)
-
Parenting Skills
-
Health Management (for mothers and children)
-
Independent Living Skills (e.g., life skills, financial planning, employment training, household management, social skills, personal care skills, nutrition training, emotional-coping skills)
-
Recreation and Socialization Skills
-
Citizenship Skills.
Within these components, Members (teenage homeless mothers in which we serve) must commit to finishing their basic level education (high school or GED), attend on-site life skills classes four nights each week, and attend therapeutic counseling. In this safe and structured environment, we strive to help our mothers improve their self-esteem, resist peer pressure, and make good choices for themselves and their children. Since opening in 1993, we have helped over 1,500 young mothers and their children.
