About Us
Helping Homeless Teenage Mothers
and Their Children
Almost Home provides up to two years of education, housing and support and eight years of after care for 15 homeless pregnant and parenting teens (ages 12-19) and their children. Our focus is to help those women who want to make good choices for themselves and their babies by encouraging them to pursue educational goals, job training, and good parenting skills. The mission of almost Home is to build new lives for pregnant teens and their babies by providing shelter, food, clothes, education, life skills, counseling, mentors, career training, and support.
With a goal of self-sufficiency and independence, those young women who complete the program and gain employment can qualify for a space in the Almost Home Apartments, a 12-unit building with two-bedroom apartments
There are many facets to the program at Almost Home:
-
Education (formal and informal)
-
Therapeutic Counseling
-
Parenting Skills
-
Health Management (for mothers and children)
-
Independent Living Skills (e.g., life skills, financial planning, employment training, household management, social skills, personal care skills, nutrition training, emotional-coping skills)
-
Recreation and Socialization Skills
-
Citizenship Skills.
Within these components, “members” of our Almost Home family (the teenage mothers and mothers-to-be we serve) must commit to finishing their basic level education (high school or GED), attend on-site life skills classes four nights each week, and attend therapeutic counseling.
In this safe and structured environment, we strive to help our mothers improve their self-esteem, resist peer pressure, and make good choices for themselves and their children. Since opening in 1993, we have helped more than 1,500 young mothers and their children.
